Re: Refurb - Organ

Dear J.S Crompton,

Thank you for your enquiry regarding the Parr Hall’s Cavaille-Coll Organ. You are quite right, the Hall is currently being refurbished and is due to reopen at the end of this month. The organ has not been removed and has been protected during the work on the hall.

Prior to the refurbishment work, the Council took the decision to dispose of the organ, because of deterioration in the condition of the instrument, and infrequent use. On that basis we are currently in negotiation with Sheffield Cathedral to relocate the organ there, subject to the Cathedral being able to raise sufficient funding to relocate and restore it. We are hopeful that this might take place next summer.

Following consultation with local people in Warrington, including the Cavaille-Coll Society, we believe this move will be the best outcome for the instrument, ensuring that it is restored, maintained and played in a way which would not be possible if it were to be retained in its current location.

Refurb - Organ

I sincerely hope that the powers-that-be have taken into account what a disaster it would be if the unique instrument that is the Cavaille Coll organ is to be lost as a result of the refurbishment. Not only would this destroy a superb instrument, the destruction would be done ignorantly and those involved ought to be ashamed. These instruments cannot be likened to any modern-day electronic devices that are manufactured by machines, these instruments are a work of art, hand crafted by dedicated craftsmen and instruments like the one at Parr Hall is a result of an organ builder's life-long passion, and like all art-forms whether it be handy-crafts, dance, music, stage/set building or any of the arts, all are practised with much passion and commitment rather than through necessity.

It may be the case that the space currently occupied by the organ could lend itself for another purpose, and by looking at your website I gather the space would be better used as a fly-tower? I remember when I first learnt of the authorities' decision to carry out works on the building that the former Ritz cinema was vacant - this being ideal for use as a theatre with its stage, flies and other facilities, not perfect but would have been a far better solution.

I fear that if the organ has been removed and disposed of the integrity of the Council could be knocked. The organ could easily have been returned as the crown jewel in the Council's crown.

J.S. Crompton.
